Peter Gluckman is University Distinguished Professor, Professor of Pediatrics and Perinatal Biology, and Director of the Liggins Institute for Medical Research and the National Center for Growth and Development, at the University of Auckland.
Mark Hanson directs the Centre for Developmental Origins of Health and Disease at the University of Southampton, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Honorary Professor at the University of Auckland.

Modern Man is in Trouble

This is a very interesting and easy to read book. Gluckman and Hanson have managed in less than three hundred pages to explain the consequences of our man-made world not longer being appropriate for the biology we evolved with. They have done so using ideas from evolutionary biology, developmental science and medicine and show an understanding of environmental change and use examples that make this book equally appealing to the technically interested and the absolutely lay reader.

The book is in two parts - the first part is about the science and the second part is about the consequences for human health and disease. Both are filled with examples and there is not much technical language. There are no chapters I found too challenging for a lay reader.

In the second part of the book they use three major illustrations; puberty aging and the menopause and obesity/diabetes. I particularly found their insights into adolescence and puberty refreshing and challenging. The concept that the age of puberty may be returning to an younger age set by evolution, while the age of psychological maturation has moved in the opposite directions changes how one thinks about adolescence and has profound implications - parents, politicians and educators should read chapter 7. Their ideas on the role of foetal development in determining why some individuals are more at risk of diabetes and obesity creates a much more balanced perspective than purely genetic perspectives have led us into. The implications for how to stop the obesity epidemic and the need for different strategies in different populations are most thought provoking and compelling.

But it is not just the specifics of these examples that makes this book so interesting. It is full of information from comparative biology, evolutionary biology, developmental biology, medicine and social science and it is the way they have combined these and produced a lucid and I think very important book. They are clearly scholars but scholars who can write in a very accessible way. They marry evolutionary biology and medicine in a much more complete and realistic way that previous attempts. And the sociological and associated commentary shows how much they have thought about the subject - the notes are quite fun too.

If you are the kind of person who enjoyed Bill Bryson's Short History or Jared diamond's Guns Germs and Steal you will enjoy this book - it will leave you thinking.

Our Bodies Fit the Ancient African Savannah, I Don't Live There

The evidence is pretty overwhelming that we developed as humans in the African Savannah. The anthropologists point out how our bodies developed over the millennia to have a lot of characteristics that helped to enable, even guarantee our survival in that environment.

There are numerous books that talk about our special adaptations: no hair ('The Naked Ape' Desmond Morris) so we wouldn't overheat while running, males with eyes optimized to detect movement of game while hunting, females with a thousand times better color sensitivity to detect the ripe fruit from the others.

All this doesn't fit very well with my day of sitting staring at the computer screen, my neighbor's driving a truck, or nearly any of today's ways of earning a living. Yup! There's a mismatch.

The authors do an excellent job of point out our world no longer fit our bodies. This is an insight that we ignore at our peril. They also point out some of the things that humankind might do to change the situation -- but BOY! is their solution going to offend some of the religious fundamentalists. Then again, wouldn't you want your children to be a better match for their society: slimmer, smarter, free from diabetes, cancer, heart disease?

Plodding with very little new. Makes a mountain out of a molehill.

It is quite a slog to get through this book to basically learn very little new if one already knew anything about genetics and inheritance. I can save you the trouble of reading it by providing the following synopsis.

Gene expression is regulated by many mechanisms. Two of these mechanisms are methylation of the DNA and histone modifications. These two mechanisms are refered to as epigenetic modifications. Studies show they are inheritable. Studies also show that these regulatory mechanisms operate during development. Based on chemical signals provided by the mother, the developing embryo can alter its development to suit the environment it thinks it will be born into (e.g., resource plentiful or resource limited or predator infested or predator free). Whether these developmental choices are effected by epigenetic mechanisms is unclear, and even if they are, it doesn't matter to the authors' arguments that the important part is developmental choices made in the womb.

Fast forward to part II of the book, which discusses "Mismatch". First the authors describe how puberty is occuring earlier and earlier, and that earlier onset started about 100 years ago. Two claims are made. First, that it used to be the case that sexual maturation (the end of puberty) and psychosexual/psycgosocial maturation (the end of adolescence) used to be more in sync. They claim that the further the two get out of sync, the worse it is for kids and society. Second, they make the claim that the time of puberty is simply going back to historical (pleoscene) norms. But these two claims seem to be in conflict, as it would mean that in the far past it was evolutionary useful to have the two be way out sync, which I doubt is the case. At any rate, the observation that puberty is occuring earlier has nothing to do with the first part of the book.

Well, actually, it sort of does, but only if you buy a gaping hole in the authors' arguments. Apparently the earlier onset might be explained by a fetus that is somehow getting the wrong signals from its mother (very handwaving arguments are used here) stating the environment it is about to be born into is impoverished, and then the infant is born into a resource rich environment, and whammo, early onset of puberty. (I personally buy into the hypothesis that the onset of puberty is caused by integration by the pituitary of the light recieved by the organism during childhood. Because artificial lighting of the last century has effectively lengthened the days of everyone, the pituitary is getting tricked into thinking that more time has passed than actually has passed.)

Then the authors discuss longevity, and once again it has little to do with any arguments of how the fetus responds to signals during development, which was the topic of the first half of the book. We historically lived only 35 to 50 years in the wild. Now we live longer. The authors talk about this, but provide no new insight.

Finally, they talk about the metabolism diseases of modern society. The modern diet is nothing like the diet humans evolved to eat. The energy dense foods we eat are killing us. But these facts, and the policies needed to confront them, have very little to do with what happens during development. Yes, there are studies that show smaller babies are more at risk of diabetes/high blood pressure/etc. But any links to developmental choices and tragetories are speculative at best.

The authors are attempting to make a mountain out of the molehill that developmental choices respond to chemical signals from the mother. Until there is more fact and less speculation, you need not learn more about it, at least from this book. This book really needed to be just a 15 page paper.

The Mix Of Romance, Mystery and Action in This Series Is Unsurpassed

I read a lot of fantasy/paranormal romance, much of what is classified as urban fantasy really is romance in many cases but I can count on my fingers(with a couple left over) the number of writers that can really pull off a true emotional, gut-felt and truly believable “I can’t live without you” romance. Nalini Singh is one of those very few and this book pulls you right into that “love to last the ages” feeling while trying to figure out a sinister plot that has you guessing a good bit.

We start with a summons to a meeting by a mysterious and ancient order of angels known as the Luminata who call the entire Cadre together to discuss the fate of Lijuan’s territory since it appears she is no longer in charge of her lands (her actual status is saved until the last page).

It soon becomes apparent that this is a dual plot since the above plot gets shunted aside until later in the book because of some very sinister things going on at the fortress of the Luminata.

This is a great set of plots and the romance is worked into the story beautifully as well as finally some answers to a few questions that have been hanging around this series for a long time plus it looks like we may add a few secondary characters to the series.

This book does reveal something that has not been shown a lot in this series, which is that none of the Cadre are really 1 dimensional characters, we get a bit of time with all of them in this book.

Bottom Line: 5 Stars, maybe I am just addicted to the writing of Nalini Singh because there is really nothing to even mention that was negative, The story was riveting, the emotion was heartfelt, the only thing I can ever complain about is this book could have been 200 pages longer and I still would have wanted more, there is so much fertile ground for future stories. 5 Stars for one of the paranormal genre’s premier writers once again giving us an exceptional story that you will remember long after the last page.

My new favorire of the series: Heart of Love, Heart of Darkness

One of my supreme delights in the literary world is a new Guild Hunter book from Nalini Singh, and when it features the main couple, Elena and Raphael, my pleasure rises high, or at least up where the angels fly. Adding to the happiness, Raphael and Elena are on a mission together, and it is clear their relationship has deepened considerably. They have been summoned along with the whole Cadre to meet at a remote compound called Lumia by a group of ascetic monk-like angels known as the Luminata who live in Morocco. That right there tells you what fun awaits because when the Cadre of archangels attend meetings, they are always amped up power fests especially with the Cascade still in effect which causes archangelic powers to rise exponentially. The very creepy Archangel of China, Zhou Lijuan’s disappearance drives the need for decisions to be made about her huge territory which is in danger of descending into chaos. The tension and drama escalates quite high with all the archangels in the world gathered in one place. Two years have passed so Elena has had some time to grow into the strength of her angel immortality as well as adjust to her consort duties; however, putting a warrior hunter angel in fancy gowns does not a calm and sedate consort make.

When Elena and Raphael arrive in Lumia, they feel a wrongness about this ancient citadel that belies the leader and brothers’ goal of gaining luminescence: a type of angelic enlightenment achieved by being set apart from the politics and machinations of the angel world. The members of this powerful sect have many hidden secrets some of which will have a life changing effect on Elena. They are accompanied by Aodhan who continues to rejoin the world and heal from his emotional wounds. He and Elena make a good investigative team tasked with unearthing the mysteries hidden deep within the stone walls as Raphael and the other archangels clash over Lijuan’s situation while reigning in their violent tendencies because being in such close proximity continually ruffles everyone’s feathers. Back in her grandmother’s homeland, Elena also seeks to find any possible information about the unknown vampire in her background. What she discovers is astonishing.

Nalini Singh’s stories always have a strong theme of love and family whether the characters are couples, blood relations, or families made by people linked together through a bond of love. So while there is plenty of action, adventure, and sensational secrets revealed, at the heart of it all as the title suggests shines the love between an archangel and his consort as Elena thinks, “Love surrounded her, so deep she felt it in her bones.” I absolutely adored this book; it may be my favorite one in the series yet. The very best stories speak to the heart, give a thrill ride, and leave the reader longing for more at the end. This book accomplishes all of those things to the highest degree and will make fans of this series feel they are soaring with the angels.

Elena's History is Explored

FINAL DECISION: Goes deeper into Elena's background in unexpected ways. This book is a tightly drawn suspense story, political thriller and a very human story about surviving and rising above the past. Plus, there is a very settled and sexy couple: Elena and Raphael.

THE STORY: This book continues the focus on guild hunter turned angel Elena and her archangel lover Raphael. Things have been quiet since the disappearance of Lijuan, the Archangel of China (who also happens to be crazy dangerous). A year has passed and because no one knows whether she lives or has withdrawn from the world and is sleeping, there is uncertainty. An ancient order of angels called the Luminata calls the Cadre together to make a determination of what to do with Lijuan's territory.

Attending the Luminata requires Raphael and Elena to travel near the place of her grandmother's birth. There, Raphael and Elena must deal with dangerous archangels, mysterious threats, strange events surrounding the Luminata. Elena also hopes to find out more about her past and that of her family.

OPINION: The Guild Hunter series returns to focus on Elena and Raphael. I have to admit that I love the Elena and Raphael books most in the series. This book, thankfully, doesn't involve problems in the relationship between Elena and Raphael (that remains increasingly strong) but rather Elena's own history.

This book continues the overarching series story regarding the Cascade, Lijuan and the possible end of the world. While this book doesn't have a romance as its organizing feature, it doesn't need one. This book delves into the adventure and politics of the Guild Hunter world -- but reserves its emotional core for Elena's discovery of her own family's past.

There is a dark suspense story involving the Illuminata who are a mysterious addition to the series. Elena ends up investigating what is going on with this mysterious group and their connection with her own family. That story keeps the pace of this book quick and the pages turning.

While the suspense story keeps the books hopping, the theme explored in this book is about how the past makes us who we are and how one can overcome the pain of the past to go forward. Multiple characters in the book have to deal with their past -- the question is how will they respond. This is most present in Aodhan who is recovering himself after years of separating himself from those he loves. The events in this book challenge his recovery and he must make a choice. The series has been an increasing interaction between those of Raphael's world and Elena. In this book, we see the developing relationship between Elena and Aodhan, which has its own contours.

Singh goes deep into the emotions of her characters and even as the events feel dark and dangerous, her characters possess a lightness and beauty that gives the book heart. I always love reading Singh's books because even when things seem bad for her characters, they maintain a likeability and a lightness of spirit that overcomes all the darkness.

The events of this series appear to be approaching a crescendo and this book provides a little breather that allows the exploration of character and relationships. Elena finds out the truth about her mother's family which has been shrouded in mystery. I'm glad I didn't know where this book was going because I enjoyed the resolution which provided a happy ending in an unexpected arena.

Without giving away the secrets of this book, I can say that this book is about survival and overcoming darkness. So many characters express this theme and it leaves such a good feeling that I dread that more darkness is on the horizon for these characters.

For fans of the series, this book gives more background on the characters you love and gets everyone in the right place for the next stage in this series. There are no new romances but much happens in this book that illuminates where the characters are now and where they have come from.

WORTH MENTIONING: We learn more about Aodhan.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ARCHANGEL'S HEART is the ninth book in the Guild Hunter series. This series builds upon each of the prior books in the series and thus should be read in order.

Great book

As a restaurant manager who's new to the industry, I found this book very helpful in sorting out all the important elements of hiring and training employees. Easy to read and to follow, and it seems to be very up-to-date with new laws and modern advice for motivating and leading employees. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in managing employees is a restaurant setting.

This picture book with its simple but accurate text and amusing illustrations is an invaluable aid to talking about depression with children. If your child, or someone important in their life, is affected by depression then this book will help you discuss the causes and treatments of depression in age appropriate language. About the Author
Lloyd Jones is a silly man with a silly beard who lives in the south of England. More of his work can be seen at www.lloydjonesillustration.com. Lloyd has a first class honours degree in Illustration from the University of Portsmouth, an MA in Sequential Design and Illustration from the University of Brighton and he is currently working on a PGCE FE from the University of Southampton. He has learned to live with his fog, rather than suffer from it.

highly recommended for Grades K-6

Every child needs to hear this book. Highly, highly recommended for Grades K-6. Depression needs to be part of children's vocabulary. Without accurate information, many children are influenced by myths about depression (i.e. just snap out of it) or have no idea that their feelings of distress are out of the norm. Left untreated, depression can wreak havoc on an individual's life. Twenty percent of teens experience depression and 1 in 8 have thoughts of suicide.
This is a great book for parents and anyone who works with children, especially at risk populations--Health teachers, school counselors, therapists...

Depression Symptoms
eating or sleeping too much or too little
feeling hopeless, guilty, ashamed
neglecting hygiene
low self esteem, self critical, pessimistic
lack of interest in activities that used to be enjoyed
low energy, difficulty focusing and making decisions/plans
irritability, aggression (teens more likely to exhibit this, rather than sadness)
gives up easily
“flat” facial expression, tone of voice
school performance worsens
physical complaints (e.g. frequent stomachaches)

A Delicate Topic Dealt With in an Amazing Way

The Princess and the Fog: A Story for Children with Depression by Lloyd Jones is a helpful picturebook for readers of all ages. It begins, as do many good stories: "Once upon a time, there was a Princess." This Princess was happy, loved, and content... until the fog came. Soon she did not want to do her favorite things, or anything really. A persistent friend offered to listen, and soon the princess was able to share with others about the presence of the fog and how it made her feel. She went to the `doctor`who whipped something up (medication) and they banished the fog, at least for now, and have a plan to deal with it when it makes periodic returns. This is a creative and entertaining book that tackles a serious topic/issue that many people do not want to deal with and is often not recognized, but depression is real and not only do adults deal with it but so do children and teenagers. This book describes and illustrates simply and beautifully the onset of depression, the experience of it at its worst, and the various self-help methods available to deal with it. More importantly, 'A Guide for Parents and Carers' at the back of the book and written by medically qualified professionals does differentiate between low mood and depression, assisting in defining the two. A great book for families dealing with the issue of depression or classrooms where a student has depression.

I guess this is a book that goes on forever. I also think it's odd that it switched narrator in the middle, kinda takes the fun away from the mysterious guy since you know what he's thinking. Story is ok, I wouldn't recommend for teens to read. Overall, I don't like cliffhangers.

14yr old POV? Creepy!!!

I think with all the sexual tension between the extremely young pov and her very experienced love interest Silver, the author should have made her at least 17. I also didn't understand the "warning' before the explicit sex scenes with Silver? Why was that necessary to include, there was no reason to have that chapter in the book. I honestly thought it was just creepy!

Skip this book unless you were looking for expensive bird-cage lining material.

Does this thing have a less than 1 star rating? Aw, it doesn't. I actually have to give this a star.

You know, if you want to watch some teenagers NOT save the day with actual humor and style, you could save yourself some time and have a Teen Titans Go marathon. Just saying.

About a tenth of the way through, I started joking with my husband about making a drinking game about each continuity error and paradox the author made. I'm currently a quarter through, and if I drank, I'd be dead of alcohol poisoning. I can't stop *laughing* as I read. Dig this s***, guys:
Amazing badass angel-kid (let's call her Mary Sue!) "fights with everyone" because she "has no friends and is miserable. Also she doesn't want to conform." What's she spend the rest of the book with? HER FRIENDS. And what does she do? Oh c'mon, guess! SHE CONFORMS. Stand up for herself? Nope. Mostly, she's a roving fashion reporter.

Oh, and did we mention those superpowers? She basically has every one, ever. We're making a half-assed bingo game here every time she pops up some new ability, with or without the aid of a trinket. So far we have about 16 powers worked up between us. Most of them involve her ability to name the designer of her friends' shoes.

Or could we discuss the magical bracelet that shows up at about 1/4 of the way through but wasn't there back when she was, oh, say, saving humans from harm? Did she just forget she had it on? Or was it a last second idea without any development?

My eight year old literally dictated (parts) of a novel better than this.

I'm going back to reading just as soon as I visit the loo. I've laughed so hard I really need to pee.

Also, I might just finish this book up WITH the drinking game. It might help to be blotto with these stereotypical characters and this wooden plot.
