About the Author

Mick Wall has been a rock journalist since 1977 and currently writes for Mojo and a variety of other publications. He traveled extensively with Guns N' Roses in the last 1980s and early 1990s, first earning Axl Rose's trust and later his fury. He lives in England.

An informative but superficial biography

If you don't already know too much about Axl Rose and Guns 'n' Roses, this is a very informative read. On the other hand, there's nothing here that's really new. Most, if not all, of the information is from secondary sources (published articles and interviews, website posts, etc.) rather than original research. It's as much a biography of the original members of Guns 'n' Roses as about W. Axl Rose. Their stories are inextricably interwoven--it's only to be expected that a bio of Axl will cover a lot of GNR territory; however, as the title promises a bio of Axl, I was expecting a little more than I got. It's tempting to compare this book with the recently published biography of ex-GNR guitarist Slash, but I won't, because Slash was cool enough to give us a window into his own life in the writing of that book and was completely on board with its content, while this bio of Axl is, as the title says, unauthorized.

It does cumulate to some degree the timeline of Axl's *still* unreleased CD Chinese Democracy, and I came away with a slighly better understanding of the mystery behind its perpetual delay. Writer Mick Wall also covers the known facts of Axl's seclusion and the emotional and legal entanglements of the years following the disintegration of the original Guns 'n' Roses, the evolution of the "new" Guns 'n' Roses, and the persistent striving toward perfection that seems to inform (and torment) every choice made by Axl Rose.

While this is a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to know something about the provocative frontman to one of the world's biggest rock bands and how it all went down, as a biography W.A.R. fails to meet its own challenge. True biography requires much more in-depth research into the biographer's subject, with input from the primary players in the life of the subject, from the subject him/herself when possible, and it requires a willingness to delve in a balanced, serious way into the influences and motivations of the subject in order to see the large framework of a life and its influence, and what that life can contribute to our understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit. Axl and his raw genius deserve as much. Hopefully his story will one day be told with the honesty it deserves.

The lives of Axl Rose...

To be blunt, anyone who is a halfway decent writer, who has been following the saga of Axl Rose/GN'R over the years, could have written this book. There is really *nothing* new here--no new insights, no new information, no secrets revealed--nada. It's a mess--just every rumor and known fact, strung together, with nothing of value to any fan or anyone curious in learning more about Axl Rose.

And Wall--yeah, we know that you have a beef with Axl--but couldn't you have been just a little more objective, instead of using spin to paint as unfavorable picture of Axl Rose as possible? For example, when discussing the band's 2002 and 2006 tours, why did you only focus on the negative reviews, and not mention any of the positive ones? When discussing "the Spaghetti Incident?," why note that it was "poorly received," when in addition to some negative feedback, it also got 3.5 Stars from ROLLING STONE and other positive reviews, such as the one from Entertainment Weekly? And these are just a few examples. And what's with the snide remarks, one after the other? It's going on 20 years since "Get in the Ring" was released, time to move on...

To be honest, "W.A.R. The Unauthorized Biography of W. Axl. Rose" says more about Mick Wall than Axl Rose. This book is nothing more than the bitter ramblings of a hack--a mediocre journalist, in the guise of a book.

About the Author
Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University's online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor's degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master's degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. but its informative. It just gets boring in areas and I have force myself to continue reading the material. But that's most textbooks. Obviously I only purchased this book to use for class. I love the class but will be glad when the semester is over...I don't know how much more I can stand of the book.

it is better to be able to

Am studying for my rectification. Am finding this is the only study source I'm using that help me keep things in my head. (If I don't pass it will be because I didn't spend enough time studying not the fault of the book.)

Other study sources I'm using:
1) 3 years of PREP questions: the long paragraph explanations with those questions make my eyes glaze over. Plus, it is better to be able to, as this book does, compare/contrast the similar conditions that will be among the answer choices.
2) MedStudy flashcards: Are a bit too simplistic and doe not give the level of detail on the conditions. Not sure they are worth paying twice as much money for 1/4 as much info -- this study guide book seems a more comprehensive source. But the flashcards are easy to grab a bunch of and throw in my purse or bag
3) Cleveland Clinic Intensive Review of Pediatrics: Am realizing that purchase may have been the least useful in context of other study aids. Using that one the least as am prioritizing doing PREP questions instead.

Positive:
-There are many decision trees/algorithms to help you differentiate similar diseases/conditions and think through appropriate next test (e.g. metabolic disease diagnosis and process of elimination)
-There are tables for a quick review of the list of disease or compare/contrast of two or more related diseases (CD vs UC, or night terror vs nightmare, poisoning substance and matched antidotes, conditions that could be mistaken for ADHD, etc)
-I'm recognizing, in bullet points, the same things in the PREP explanations, but in a much more accessible and easier to memorize format
(When I go back to redo a PREP question I got wrong, I can't remember the right answer from the description. But if, after getting a PREP question wrong, I go to the same section in this book, I remember what I was supposed to have learned.)
-Last few pages has a "Last minute review" that describes the likely clinical scenario for each disease -- wish this were a booklet that could be separated from book to carry for quick and easy review
-Has a good number of pictures which are pretty good quality
-Has EKGs, x-rays, histology pictures, diagrams (like various salter harris fractures), etc.
-The text is clear, concise, easy to read, well organized.
-Reviews pathophysiology that the PREP questions seem to ask

Negative: None really except, maybe:
Not a small or light book so not easy to carry around to read on the subway.

good reference book - along works along with lectures on youtube

I use this more as a reference to study from and not my main source to study for peds board 2nd re-certification (coming up in 2 months) since I bought this after I already started studying using another source - I already took the first boards 17 years ago and 1st recertification 10 years. I mainly use Surfing your way to recertification only b/c I used the laughing your way for my first recertification which I did very well on and also did lots of AAP Prep questions - about 5 years worth and the ABP practice questions they provide. I also use Youtube and search up diseases I've never seen in person and Osama Naga also has Youtube lectures that tie in with this book of which I also review as well for some chapters. It's much harder to study as years pass. This study guide covers more stuff that the ABP content guidelines does not cover. Of what I covered so far since I'm not done studying, I liked the metabolic chapters and the approach he outlines.

The book is above my expectation. This is the best pediatric board review among other books out there. Easy and fast to read. I like the bullet point format, and the last chapter; last minute review is brilliant. It is the perfect tool, and easy to retain. Also, the book is linked to a Great!!! Tool of a sequence of free videos on YouTube made by the same author. good philosophical discussion of nationality

This book contains a good discussion of nationality and its consequences for our daily lives. Miller discusses different philosophical positions on nationality, namely ethical universalism vs. ethical particularism and conservative nationalism vs. liberal nationalism. He believes that nationality can serve many constructive purposes, including keeping us together as an (imagined) community plus giving a basis for trust within a state. Miller recognizes the problems inherent in nationality - for instance the never-ending problems of supporting national self-determination as a doctrine - although he claims that nationality and nationalism are not equivalent. He argues that we should make nationality as non-ethnic as possible to include all members of the nation.
Miller does falter when it comes to the ethics of nationality in international relations, claiming that we should sponsor a 'friendly rivalry' between nations and help other nations help themselves without realizing how such a position can lead towards violating his belief in the inherent right for all nations to exist. At the end of the book he also supports the right of a state to offer protection to its national culture to prevent the McDonaldization of the world's cultures, something that can end up being quite illiberal in response to something many authors (like Anthony Smith) believe has been blown out of proportion. Nonetheless this book is quite generally quite convicing and is thus valuable reading for students of political theory and nationalism alike.
