About the Author
Steve Cha has worked in over a hundred film, television, and commercial productions in Hollywood. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Arts. Steve is director of Uncensored, a Los Angeles based Bible fellowship, and is a speaker in promoting the Great Commission.

Genuine author, yet not the best approach

Having worked with Steve on set, I admit he's such a nice guy and it's been a real encouragement to have another Christian brother on set. And yet I sadly can't really recommend this book. I grew up just as evangelical as him, have worked a bit on the mission field, and have been working on set for 8+ years thus far in Hollywood. His perspective is quite insulated and he's religiously quite hard on himself when he feels he let God down. Just as we need to speak (preach), we also need to have ears to listen and eyes to observe. More people in Hollywood than he realizes have heard the gospel and they simply internalize it and manifest it in their daily lives in ways different than Steve is used to. We each need to be weary of being overcome by a super-hero God-complex, which can manifest by (1) looking down on those unlike us who (2) we hope to save through our own righteousness (but we term "through Christ," using Christianese) when (3) we've lost sight of our own fallibility and sin in the midst of it, with (4) a religious spirit in, on, or over us feeding on each isolated emotional religious response one can get from those on set who seem receptive to talk religion. I respect Steve's ability to get the gospel into the hands of many more than I do, and yet I believe I've found a way to connect more personally with some in Hollywood, who don't seem to have their guard up as much to true relationship and honesty about my own struggles and questions. Respect and openness can then be built, laying a foundation to communicate the gospel in other ways. While Steve's stories are definitely quite fun to read, there's enough warning signs in this book that a particular Bible-based Hollywood ministry has recommended it not be read. Steve is a leader though in terms of boldness and getting the gospel into the hands of others.

Reaching a decadent industry for Christ

If, as a Christian, you have ever wondered what it would take to reach the movie industry with the gospel this book is a must read. I am grateful to have met Steve at church and see his heart for the lost and to have learned through reading this book what it cost Him to proclaim the saving message of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in a very dark industry. As Christians we are to preach the gospel to all, regardless of the consequences. Steve's book is a testimony to that reality. Hollywood Mission: Possible also serves as a reminder of the urgency of seizing any and every opportunity we have to proclaim the saving message of the gospel.

challenging

i've been a christian for a while but always had negative opinions of evangelizing to strangers or new acquaintances. i believed such methods were ineffective. After reading this book, it really posed a question for me. i can tell that cha is trying to convey the urgency of our mission to deliver the good news. perhaps i have been hiding behind my reasonings to avoid the challenges of active of evangelizing...

Key Muscles of Yoga

This book is fantastic! Have both Vol I & II, and they are invaluable for anyone wanting to learn about yoga, being healthier, or any nursing or med, or physical therapy student.
The book shows which muscles are involved in each yoga move - the ones working, being stretched, or supporting the body weight. For anyone in medicine, this also breaks down movements into steps and illustrates why the patient is in pain with that movement. For anyone in physical therapy, is illustrates why you need to do that excerise & shows how it will help you.
As a student in a yoga teacher training class, this helps me learn how to do the poses correctly and which muscles are working with each pose and how to avoid stressing injuried body parts. Fantastic reading and a great resource!

Beautifully illustrated anatomy reference - only uses Sanskrit names

As someone with a very scientific mind, sometimes I get frustrated with the vague terms that get used during normal yoga classes. I was looking for a book that got into the really technical anatomical details, and I found it. This book is a beautifully illustrated anatomy reference that should be helpful for yogis, fitness instructors, physical therapists, or anyone who is just curious about how their muscles and bones work together in different poses. The only complaint I have is that all the poses in the book are described using only the Sanskrit names. I’m familiar with some of the names, but I spend a fair bit of time googling the ones I don’t know to figure out the Americanized name for the asana while reading this book.

Perfect Anatomy Book for the Beginner

I have many anatomy books after completing my 200hr yoga training this fall. While there are many wonderful texts out there, The Key Muscles of Yoga Vol. I is the best for the beginner. The computer generated illustrations are comprehensive and the minimal text really gets the main points across. Another benefit for the person new to anatomy is that the bones and muscles of each major group are covered with reference to the movement they make in various yoga poses. Additionally, because this written by an MD, the technical language is there but it's not scary and provides a great introduction to learning the proper movement terms.

Highly recommend this for the person new to either yoga, anatomy or both!

Explains the "why" but could go deeper on the "how"

I wanted to love this book, but I only just liked it. I got some good pieces of information out of it, but nothing too revolutionary. The biggest takeaway is something I knew already but something that was good to read in the way the author presented it, and that's the fact that negative emotions aren't bad to have. You can learn from them and use them to guide you to living a life that's more in tune with your values and soon you'll feel less negative emotions once you're operating all on the same frequency with yourself. I wanted this book to go deeper, though. I felt the explanations of how to do something, how to help yourself really get unstuck, stopped short.

An issue I personally have is knowing what my values are...I just simply don't know them. It would have been nice if this book gave a bit more detail as to how one might be able to figure out their values, besides trial and error and listening to their emotional feedback. I value things but don't act on them, and I'm not sure if those are still things I actually value. Maybe they're just things I'd like to value, but it'd take a super big change in character for me to act on those values and I'm not sure how to do that (this book didn't help with that). Since I'm focused on those as my values, I'm ignoring whatever the hell my real values are. But without those values in place, I don't know what I'm left with. Maybe I'm a terrible person who doesn't value much? Who knows, I don't.

Labeling emotions was a helpful exercise that I took away from this book; it's good to not place blame or judgment with how you feel and let things just *be* what they are without trying to force them into something else. That said, I read this book because I know changes need to happen in my life and while I'm not going to try to force those changes, I'm still not 100% sure how to solidly guide myself into those changes. I'm well-versed with mindfulness and I know that a big element of suffering is our human tendency to attach expectations to things, and letting go of those expectations is important. Emotional Agility touches upon this, but I felt the author could again go further in explaining how one can let go. There can be a lot of emotional trauma and history that leads one to hold onto something for dear life, even if it's hurting them to do so and they're aware of that (such as a past love that has no chance of being mended back into a relationship). But just being able to let go doesn't magically happen when you know that you should do it and why you should it (but oh, how I wish that were all it took).

If a workbook based on this book was released, that would probably be extremely helpful for people, such as myself, who are still feeling stuck. I know the actions to take but I'm still weary on how to take those actions. Even if I know what step one is, I might not know how to get to step one or act upon my motivation to get myself there. There's a missing link, a disconnect, between where I'm currently at and how to start with what I want to change and embrace to ease my daily suffering with things. This is most likely my fault, not the author's fault, but if the author was willing to put together a workbook to expand on this book, I would surely purchase it. Something to get the ball rolling and help me build up the momentum of being able to get unstuck.

This book has great ideas in it, it makes sense, it just didn't get me in a position where I could do something with that information. Still a good read, and I recommend it for anywhere looking for a place to start if they're feeling like the world is against them and they can't keep their head above water.

Time Very Well Spent!

I recently heard Dr. David speak at a leadership conference offered by Harvard Medical School and that’s why I purchased Emotional Agility. I was inspired by her presentation and storytelling and I just wanted more. I wasn’t disappointed. This book is written in the same humble and straightforward tone in which she speaks. She makes the information accessible and enjoyable.

As someone who works with corporate and law enforcement leaders, I’ve also been doing research and reading the literature others have referenced related to emotional intelligence, mindset, habits, mindfulness, etc., for years. What this book adds for me is the bridge between the AWARENESS of our emotions and how we habitually operate ("layering, bottling, brooding") to the power of CHOOSING how we spend our sorely taxed headspace and, perhaps more importantly, to what end. There is a practical toolkit here. I’m reading it again.

Finally, a how-to book on emotional maturity!

As a "kindergartener" in my journey toward resilience and maturity, I found a lot of hope in this book. Dr. David described a pragmatic process of seeing thoughts and emotions as they are, and recognizing that we have a choice as to how we see them, and act according to our values. My paradigm was challenged to be objectively scrutinizing what I think and feel, "labeling your thoughts and emotions and seeing them for what they are: information rather than facts or directives. This is what allows us to step out to create distance from and gain perspective on our mental processes, which then defangs their power over us.". I am going back to re-read the book and take more notes. This is a book that will help you to not dismiss or ignore "process" emotions in a healthy way.

Born into slavery in Missouri near the end of the Civil War, baby George Carver was kidnapped by bushwhackers. Ransomed and freed by his owner he later traveled to Kansas at age 12. For the next 14 years he drifted the Kansas plains alone, but always curious, always inventive. A natural genius, he found his calling at Iowa State. Some thought he was the most promising horticulturist in the nation. He spurned prestige schools to teach at all black Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. There his creative mind developed better ways to grow and use peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybeans and cotton. He significantly influenced agriculture in the deep south. His immense talents did not go unnoticed. His advice was sought by industrial genius Henry Ford and American presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge and Franklin Roosevelt as well as Senators and Congressmen. Carver died in 1943 after a lifetime of scientific and artistic achievement. Soon thereafter, Franklin Roosevelt honored Carver by designating the George Washington Carver National Monument in Missouri. It was the first national monument dedicated to an African-American and the first to honor anyone other than a president.

I absolutely loved it. I'd heard of George Washington Carver but ...

I absolutely loved it. I'd heard of George Washington Carver but other than the mention of a peanut, I knew absolutely nothing about him. This book really captures his personality and his spirituality. Everyone has a personality and the traditional history class often overlooks this and gives you the thumbnail, that you need to pass the test. In light of the political unrest in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, we contrast it with Carver's basically non-confrontational approach. But spiritually, long before Dr. Martin Luther King, he was praying for his enemies. "Bless those that curse you & pray for those that despitefully use you." While Carver left the battle in God's hand, this book shows how God Blessed him for holding on (like Jacob wrestling with an angel of God). I'm curious as to if "Curious George" was in someway inspired by Carver's personality. His "Collection" is quite intriguing along with his unquenchable desire to learn. "I have to know the names of things." In this reading, we see how racism humiliates & hurts the victim. His denial of an admission to a university in Kansas (because of his race) was one of the most hurting experiences, of his life. He didn't openly talk about it, but God Blessed him despite of it. It's quite touching, when friends of his, recognize that he's simply too intelligent to not pursue higher learning. He never spoke of the discrimination, at Kansas, and without his really asking them, helped Carver pursue his dream of "knowing the names of things." That plus God's inspirations leads him to making over 300 products from a peanut. And all he was really doing was fulfilling the thirst for knowledge that God had given him. He saw the earth as a garden with their being a use for everything. The earth has certainly benefitted from his knowledge.

THE TRUE STORY OF A GENIUS WHO LOVED PLANTS

This enjoyable and amazing book about George Washington Carver and his early childhood, his struggles for an education, and his response to those who encouraged and aided him in his quest for a chance to explore horticulture is fascinating. All these years I had a vague knowledge of his work with peanuts - now I know what a contribution he made when given a chance - he was definitely a genius. After finally obtaining recognition and studying at Iowa State College, he did his major work with plants at Tuskegee Institute under the leadership of Booker T. Washington. The Civil war was over, but gaining recognition as an African-American in the horticultural world proved to be daunting.

Since this book covers just the basic knowledge of Carver's life and life-work, I plan to search for a more thorough book to learn of his contributions to science in more detail. Enjoy this book as a starter.

Very Informative Read

This was the first book I've read of Carver's life and was truly amazed at his life, faith and accomplishments. It was a quick read and I'm able to walk away with a pretty good idea of his struggles, his determination and grit towards what God had gifted to him. Of particular interest was his faith and how he always leaned on Scripture during the good times and the bad.
