Great resource

I bought this book for my son to keep him brushed up over the summer. I was so happy I made that decision because sure enough, upon entering 3rd grade the following year, this was the exact type of passages and bubble tests that were given weekly in class. In addition, it helped prepare him for the school's standardized testing. If you are unsure of your child's reading comprehension, I would suggest buying this type of resource. We both enjoyed this book.

Great Worksheets

Though listed for grades 3-4, this book covers a wide range of abilities. Reading materials are between 1.9 to 4.9. There are more reading stories between 2.0 and 3.5 in all sorts of styles: recipies, non-fiction, fiction with excellent W/H questions. Some are asked as multiple choice and others need a sentence written in response. This series is completely worth buying.

WE ARE GRATIFIED TO LEARN THAT THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS BOOK HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED BY OUR colleagues in colleges and universities as well as by design and construction professionals. We have received many comments and suggestions, new reference data, and our publisher encouraged us to prepare this second edition only two years after the initial publication.

One major addition in this second edition is Chapter 18, Noise and Vibrations in Mechanical and Electrical Systems. With the increased use of mechanical and electrical equipment in buildings, indoor and outdoor noise and vibration could be a detriment to productivity and quality of life. This new chapter provides practical guidelines for architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners. As in the other chapters, the approach is to emphasize what and why rather than how.

The topics covered in this book are broad and are in a state of continuous advancement. New technologies and practices are occurring at such a rapid pace that substantial updating is necessary every few years. This is particularly true in the area of commuiucations and illumination engineering. For this reason, we decided to engage several contributing authors who are authorities ill their fields of engineering or professional practices. In future editions, additional contributing authors will be invited to participate, providing valuable inputs to one or more of the remaining chapters. We hope that with each new edition, this book will be recognized as the authority in every field of building engineering. Our approach, however, is to stress uniformity, continuity, and consistency so that all chapters read as if written by one hand.

This book covers five major disciplines, namely: HVAC; plumbing and fire protection; electrical power and auxiliary systems; illumination; and noise and vibrations. Chapter 1, The Scope and Impact of Mechanical and Electrical Systems, is a useful overview for both students and professionals. Great book for newbies!

If ur stepping into the building services industry, this book will be a comprehensive packaged info for your reading pleasure. Includes lotsa real-life diagrams, plan routings, concepts and explanation. It's 4am over here in Singapore and I've just finished reading one of the topics, just imagine how attractive the contents this book has! However, the only and regretable drawback is: the units are empirical which make it very difficult for me for in my country, we use SI metric units.

Very good book. Helps you understand the systems inside (and outside) of buildings in use everyday that most folks don't have a clue about. If you are interested in understanding how your building equipment functions this is a good book for you. Down to earth and well written. Recommend to property management personnel.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (3rd Edition)

This book is terrible. If you are a certified HVAC specialist, it is for you. However, if you are new to this then it is a total waste of money. Explanation is bad, example are nowhere relate to the section discussed. And worst of all, there is no answer keys. You will not have a clue if you are correct or not. Every chapter there are as least half of the review question are calculations, yet in each chapter there will be probably one page showing how calculation is done. Example one of the simplest thing:

COP = Cooling Effect / Power Input. If you look up the index, you cannot find the word "cooling effect", find out whichever chapter they discuss, or show you how to calculate the "cooling effect".

"Qualli" or "Good"

Like the reviewer before me, I got a copy of this book in the discount rack of a bookstore in Mexico City. It is one of the most profound and thought-provoking books I've ever read in my life. The one part of the book that still comes back to me is the one that talks about the word "qualli" which means "good." Apparently, there is no word for the word "bad." The only thing that is closely related is the word, "aqualli" or "not good." It makes you think twice about everyday actions and giving value to those things that really need it.

Finally understanding the circle

I just happened to come across this book one day while I was in Mexico City. I have found it to be a beautifully written book with the most profound and thought-provoking philosophies. Should an English translation ever be released, I hope it is as carefully translated as the Spanish version, and that the philsophies ring through loud and clear. This is a wonderful read for anyone, particularly those who are interested in philosophies based on Nature.

About the Author
Now deceased, Clair Davies, NCTMB (Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork), specialized in trigger point massage for the treatment of pain. Mr. Davies s interest in massage began when he successfully self-treated a frozen shoulder with trigger point massage. Inspired by the experience, he began an intensive private study of trigger points and referred pain. He subsequently retired from a thriving piano service business to attend the Utah College of Massage Therapy where he trained as a professional massage therapist. From his home base in Lexington, Kentucky, Mr. Davies traveled extensively with his daughter Amber, leading continuing education workshops for professionals on trigger point massage. Clair Davies died peacefully at home in 2006 of colon cancer.

Finally in Spanish! Por fin en español!

I have this book in English too. I healed my frozen shoulder with its help. I have recommended it over and over, but some people I told them about, don't speak well enough English to really take advantage of it. Finally it is available in Spanish. Excellent book. Very accurate. I have nothing else to say.

Con la ayuda del texto en inglés, curé mi hombro "pegado". He recomendado el libro múltiples veces, pero algunas de las personas a quienes se los recomendé no hablan suficiente inglés para aprovecharlo adecuadamente. Finalmente, ya lo hay en español. Excelente libro. Muy exacto. No hay más que decir.

Maravilloso libro de autoayuda. El manual del usuario de un cuerpo humano.

Este maravilloso libro cambio mi vida. La teoria de los puntos de activacion es medicamente comprobada y en ella se basan muchas tecnicas como la acupuntura, acupresion, reflexologia, etc. Pero este sistema es de autoayuda y el autor explica de una manera simple (es decir, no hay que ser medico ni saber de medicina para obtener beneficios de este libro) como curarse a si mismo sin necesidad de metodos invasivos como poner agujas ni nada por el estilo. Explica la teoria del funcionamiento muscular (Fisiologia) y de como durante ciertas actividades en la vida se crean o "activan" los puntos de activacion (trigger points), y de los dolores que estos causan, que en muchas veces suceden en lugares lejanos al punto donde se localiza el punto de activacion. Por ejemplo en mi caso un punto de activacion del gluteo medio me causaba un dolor agonizante en la parte baja de la espalda que me hacia creer en un problema espinal, siendo que al desactivar el punto de activacion se resolvio el problema como si fuera algo milagroso. Si sufre Ud. algun dolor, le recomiendo este libro, que ya es mi primera ruta cuando tengo algun dolor, y le sugiero intentar esta tecnica antes de considerar cualquier cirugia ni de espalda, ni de rodilla, ni de tunel carpal, etc.

Es un manual muy completo y muy bien explicado. Puede por ejemplo buscar el punto de activacion a partir de un esquema de la region donde tiene dolor, y de alli ir "buscando" los puntos de activacion e irlos desactivando. Tambien el autor explica que actividades causan los puntos de activacion y como evitar que recurran. Y si Ud. es un especialista en masaje deportivo o terapeutico, tiene tambien excelentes tecnicas para el masajista o terapeuta.

Esta es la traduccion al Espanol del original, he usado ambos y esta es muy buena traduccion. Aunque los dibujos y esquemas son de escala un poco mas reducida que los originales, son perfectamente entendibles.

Hardy Boys Meet 50 Shades of Grey

For all of those who thought this was the best book you've ever read, allow me to express a different opinion without the literary scud missiles heading my way.

My first suggestion would be to read the sample before buying. The idea of having three alpha males (former military) planning romantic parties seemed unusual. Sadly, it degenerated into silliness.

Imagine our three vets being given a person's name and where she works, but then asking their secretary to contact their buddy at the police station to get her contact info. Hello! Internet anyone? ??

The dialogue is pretty stiff. Our heroine says things like "gosh" during a three - way encounter.

Apparently this kind of sexual hijinks is the norm for our saucy trio, yet right after the action, one of them wants to stake his claim and fly solo with the heroine. So a couple of hours ago, you couldn't have figured that out?

Having three hot guys following strange women around to find our their favorite color and other preferences just got lame. If they followed you into the grocery store to pick up a few items, how would they know you liked lobster and filet mignon for a fancy night out? "Hey guys! She likes Cheerios, whole wheat bread and mint toothpaste!"

At one point in the book, our GI Joes need to get to the heroine a.s.a.p. The wannabe boyfriend complains that they had to haggle with someone to borrow the guy`s truck for a couple of hours. He makes a mental note to kick the guy`s butt for delaying them over the $100 price. So, action man, your girlfriend`s life is on the line. Why not toss the guy a thousand bucks? (Their company owns a freaking yacht.) Why not beat him up and grab his keys? This was too funny. I can hear it in my head. "Men, Lynn is in danger. Offer him $40. No, he wants $200. Try $60! She`s worth it!"

Couldn't decide on 1 star or two. Two because the book was only $.80. Definitely don't want to know more about what's coming next with Jack and Pepper. This wouldn't be on my reread list or as they would say in this book -- I. WOULD. NOT. READ. THIS. AGAIN.

****My whole post is a spoiler alert******

Whoa! This book is SO not for me. I like sexy in a man. I don't like sleazy. And, I definitely think that men who ONLY view women as a quick fix for their raging hormones are sleazy. And threesomes? Nope. A real romance killer for me. I thought the premise for this book was cute. Three ex-military men setting up a service to help clueless men woo their women sounded unbelievable but promising. I saw all kinds of comedic value here. It didn't take too long for me to think that this wasn't going to be comedy. I am not one to mind a little over the top language, but this was waaaay out there. I really liked how the dude "fell" for the hot chick doing the yoga when he was only supposed to be investigating her. So, then, why did his next encounter with her lead to three-way sex with his buddy? That was so romantic. NOT.. I quit reading and deleted during the first three-way. I can only assume there will be many more. I just don't care.

I really wanted to like this book. It started out good and I was routing for Parker but he shares the girl he's supposed to like with his friend. Who does that?! Then he wants a relationship with her. Baby bye not my thing.

Brief yet very good introduction to psychoanalysis.

This book is an excellent beginners text on the history of psychoanalysis. It is by no means exhaustive, nor could it be. It simply covers too many important personalities to be more than introductory, yet it fulfills that purpose admirably. The book traces the history of thought in and about the subject of psychoanalysis. It begins with Freud's discovery of the psychogenic nature of hysteria, to his discovery of the unconscious, some of his other theories, and how he applied them in clinical management of patients. Others studied under him, and came to realize new facts about the mind, and new dimensions in the way it operates. This, in turn, gave rise to newer theories. The book traces this expansion, synthesis and sometimes clash between theories to bring us to our present understanding of the mind. The meaning of these theories is demonstrated in concrete terms by the inclusion of clinical cases to demonstrate the various types of pathological manifestations. The book flows very well from one psychoanalyst to another, emphasizing the indebtedness of each to their predecessors. Sigmund and Anna Freud, Adler, Bettelheim, Jung, Sullivan, Bowlby, Kahn and many others are revealed. It is both scientific and historical at the same time, and is very engaging. A good read!

Essential Guide

Mitchell and Black provide an essential guide to the major theoretical developments in the field of psychoanalysis since its founding by Freud. They do just what you'd want them to do: they introduce you to each major theorist as a person as well as a thinker, they put each theoretical development in historical perspective both in the context of psychoanalysis and the larger social picture, they show how each thinker developed and how they responded to challenges in the field, and they show how unresolved issues led to the next theoretical breakthrough. All this is done in an accessible narrative style that even educated beginners will find rewarding. Social work students in my classes found this book very helpful. Mitchell and Black are both seasoned clinicians so their writing sometimes sings with clinical insight.

Mitchell and Black have produced a comprehensive account of psychoanalytic thought from its origin (with a clear, cogent overview of Freud) to contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice. This book will be useful to students of psychology as well as to more informed readers interested in an enjoyable and well-executed review of the basics of psychoanalytic thought, theory and practice. A good read.

Working first for the Chicago Cubs and then for the Philadelphia Phillies, he signed up 50 players who went on to the major leagues, including such stars as Ferguson Jenkins and Mike Schmidt. Winegardner, who accompanied Lucadello during his last year on the job, depicts an uncommonly generous man who sat through hundreds of college, high school and sandlot games, ever on the lookout for young men with the "right stuff" to take them to the top--and always willing to help them. In illuminating Lucadello's life, which ended in suicide, Winegardner ( Elvis Presley Boulevard ) evokes the spirit of baseball.

Tony Lucadello, likely to be the first scout to be inducted into Cooperstown, related to Winegardner during their trips through the Midwest the tricks of the trade in identifying and signing future major leaguers. Winegardner is reminiscent of David Halberstam in his research and reporting style, as he faithfully chronicles the events and emotions of the Lucadello scouting trips. The behind-the-scenes insight into baseball scouting alone is worthy reading, but the book's ending is more dramatic than any fictional account. A good contrast to Moneyball

The bestseller Moneyball should be read in conjunction with this book for two reasons. First, they are both enjoyable reads, written in dramatically different ways. Moneyball is like a group of interesting and informative short stories/magazine articles. Prophet of the Sandlots, on the other hand, is more like a lovingly crafted tale about an old-time baseball guy, that older gent sitting in the bleachers taking notes on the high school player. It is a story about a baseball life and serves as a tribute to a man and a bygone era.

Second, Prophet of the Sandlots reflects why the old-time baseball scouts are still essential to the talent evaluation aspect of the game. No matter how much statistical analysis is ever done, there is no substitute for the trained and experienced eyes of the Tony Lucadello's of the sport. These contrasts make Prophet of the Sandlots even more interesting, beyond the highly descriptive and evocative prose that Mark Winegardner utilizes to tell this touching story.

I read this book years ago and have recommended it often to not only baseball fans, but also to fans of good reading. Hopefully it will come back into print and will become readily available again.

Prophet of The Sandlots - Review

This is one of the better "first attempts" at baseball writing ever! Mark Winegardner spends a year w/ baseball's greatest scout and learns & shares all Tony Lucadello has to offer. Pre-draft Baseball is contrasted w/ post-draft Baseball. Several great pointers for baseball coaches and parents!!!! Prophet of the Sandlots (knowingly or otherwise) makes a very strong arguement that Baseball's HOF should make room for it's greatest scout ever.
This book is now out of print. This is unfortunate as it should be required reading for all fans of Baseball. I would make two recommendations to Mark Winegardner if a reprint is on the horizon- 1) Add photographs to the next edition. Ideas: Tony in his player's uniform, Tony at the gravesite of the Ohio born HOF'er, Tony's wedding pictures, Tony w/ Mike Schmidt, etc. 2) Add an index at the back listing people covered in the book w/ page numbers.

First off, I purchased this as a "Used" book through Amazon via another seller, and the quality of the book I received was outstanding ! No problems there !

The book & story itself is certainly a must read for the avid baseball fan ! Well written and informative, with a lot of real-life connections that help make it very real (ever hear of a baseball player named Mike Schmidt ? Guess who signed him ?!). And there certainly were some unexpected twists to the story !

About the Author

Dr. Edward G. Nawy is a distinguished professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He has been active in the ACI and PCI since 1959 and is internationally recognized for his extensive research work in the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, particularly in the areas of crack and deflection control. Dr. Nawy has published more than 175 papers in numerous technical journals worldwide. He is also the author of several books, including Prestressed Concrete: A Fundamental Approach, Fifth Edition (2006), published by Prentice Hall; Fundamentals of High Performance Concrete , Second Edition (2001), published by John Wiley and Sons; and Concrete Construction Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (2008), published by Taylor and Francis/CRC Press. He has been the recipient of several major awards, including the Henry L. Kennedy Award of the ACI, the ACI Concrete Research Council Award, the ACI Design Practice Award, honorary membership of the ACI, honorary professorship with the Nanjing Institute of Technology, and the emeritus honorary membership of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Concrete. Dr. Nawy is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and Florida, Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), Chartered Civil Engineer overseas, and has been a consultant in forensic engineering throughout the United States.

Buy a different book

This book exemplifies the the way a book should not be written. The examples, writing techniques and homework problems in this book are extremely difficient. Numerical mistakes seem to be everywhere in this book. The examples are far from real world application. Very little theory about reinforced concrete is in this book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Book has far too many errors

This book has some useful information. However, like all of Dr. Nawy's books, it is very poorly written and contains far too many errors to be considered a useful text. For reinforced concrete, MacGregor (4th edition) is a much better investment. For prestressed concrete, try Collins & Mitchell.

Students Watch Out!

This book portrays concrete design in a cookbook fashion with little emphisis on actually understanding the material. The explinations that are given are wordy and not clear. While this book might be considered a good refrence book, I would not recomend it for students.
